![]() ![]() Her search eventually leads to a Himalayan village, whose generous inhabitants temporarily give her a sense of purpose amidst staggering natural beauty. Upon arriving in tumultuous Jammu, Shalini is taken in by a Muslim family in Kishtwar and struggles to understand the fractured nature of her surroundings: the role of the omnipresent Indian Army, the disappearances of local Muslims, and the frequent violence against and perpetrated by both Muslims and Hindus. In an effort to find closure, Shalini leaves her native Bangalore to search for Bashir Ahmed, her mother’s only friend, who she hasn’t seen in years. Unmoored by her mother’s death, 24-year-old Shalini apathetically floats from job to job while receiving financial support from her affluent father. Vijay’s remarkable debut novel is an engrossing narrative of individual angst played out against political turmoil in India’s Jammu and Kashmir state in the late 2000s. ![]()

![]() The matter-of-fact madness of the hi-jinks here contrasts nicely with Jonathan's civic-minded response, as he heads to City Hall for an answer. ![]() Originally published in 1981, this entertaining picture-book from Canadian author/illustrator team Robert Munsch and Michael Martchenko has that surreal sense of humor I have come to associate with their work. Then he discovers who controls the computer, fetches him some jam, and gets the problem solved. Seeking answers at City Hall, Jonathan is told by the mayor that everything is controlled by the computer, and that there is nothing to be done. At first Jonathan's mother doesn't believe him, but then she witnesses the phenomenon herself. ![]() But then a subway stop just opens up in his apartment wall, and chaos ensures. ![]() When Jonathan's mother pops out to the shop for a can of noodles, she tells him not to make a mess. ![]() ![]() ![]() OPINION: The strength of this book is the relationship between Henry and Adelaide. When Adelaide and Henry find themselves on opposite sides of stopping a wedding, the two take a journey across England, both thwarting and tantalizing one another. In her latest quest to help a young woman, Adelaide encounters Henry, Duke of Clayborn, who has tried to live the role of a duke to perfection. Adelaide has another secret she was not born to the aristocracy but rather is the daughter of a crime lord. THE STORY: Adelaide Frampton spends her time in ballrooms watching as she pretends to be a wallflower, but she is actually the Matchbreaker who helps women avoid the altar. Much of the book is a road trip between them (only one bed at the inn!), so their relationship shines. I enjoyed the relationship between Adelaide and Henry. ![]() Heartbreaker (Hell's Belles, #2) by Sarah MacLeanįINAL DECISION: Much better than the first in the series. ![]() ![]() ![]() (Danny Webb/Danny Miller) and Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele). ![]() He also had a role in Honest, playing Mack Carter. There’s just so much wanting in her, with no path to getting what she wants. I already love this sort of snark at Manhattan pretensions, and I was sold on Florence about 5 pages in. It’s just as cringey and as ballsy as that sounds. When a higher-up hookup think he can take advantage of her, she awkwardly attempts blackmail for a publishing in. You learn exactly what Florence wants and what she’s willing to do to get it early on. painfully aware that she’s a struggling outsider in the city, and willing to do whatever she needs to do. In the beginning, she reminds me a bit of Louise in Social Creature. ![]() She wants to be a writer, but the prep-school Manhattan literary crowd has their own language and culture, and it’s not something she learned in Florida. If you’re the kind of reader who doesn’t like hints before you read, skip this review. Mostly mild spoilers, I mean, about the character development and my intense book feelings while reading, not a total plot reveal.
